“Every time I come to Dr. Vashi's office I am so impressed with the way everyone works together. It makes me feel like we are all part of a team – a team dedicated to keeping my teeth and mouth as healthy as possible!

"I was very concerned when Dr. Vashi informed me about the periodontal issues I was having. But, after he explained the way we were going to treat the problem I left feeling a little better. Subsequent visits and procedure have helped a lot and I feel very confident that Dr. Vahsi and Tara have given me the very best care.

"It starts when you open the door to the office, Donna’s smile- Claudia’s welcome, Tara’s professionalism, and Dr. Vashi’s expertise and caring manner make me feel like I am the star patient! I know, without a doubt, that everyone is there to make sure that I have a good experience and that I get the very best care.”

Gum disease and your health

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can adversely affect your overall health. Many patients don’t even realize they have gum disease until the damage is irreversible. Gum disease can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease, low-birth-weight or preterm babies, and can contribute to blood sugar control problems for diabetics. Additionally, gum disease causes bleeding, swollen gums and tooth loss. Find out more about the causes of gum disease.

We can handle most cases of gum disease in our office using deep cleaning (also known as "scaling and root planing"), although more advanced cases may need to be referred to a specialist.

Advanced Gum Treatment with Arestin

In addition to deep laser cleaning, Dr. Vashi uses Arestin® therapy to help rid your gums of infectious bacteria. Arestin therapy is accomplished by placing a special antibiotic in the deep pockets under the gums where bacteria accumulates. Arestin therapy greatly reduces the chances of further progression of gum disease.

Additional treatment for your gums

If additional gum treatment is needed, Dr. Vashi may prescribe special mouth rinses or more frequent in-office cleanings.

What causes gum disease?

Poor oral hygiene, irregular professional dental cleanings, smoking or chewing tobacco, taking certain medications, defective fillings, crooked teeth and systemic diseases are contributing factors to gum disease.

Some warning signs of gum disease are:

  • Gums that bleed during brushing
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
  • Permanent teeth that are loose or separating
  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

A healthy lifestyle, regular brushing and flossing and routine checkups at the dentist are the best way to keep your gums healthy and avoid gum disease. Deep cleaning may also be recommended.

If you suspect that you have gum disease or if you have any of the symptoms above, schedule an appointment with Dr. Vashi right away.
